3 Tips That Will Make You Stand Out In A Remote Interview

In this article, I want to dive into 3 components that will ensure you stand out in a remote interview!

If you are looking for new opportunities, you MUST prepare yourself to stand out in your next job interview. Good enough isn’t good enough, not right now. This is a different environment than we’ve ever seen ourselves in before.

3 Tips to Upgrade Your Remote Interview Game

#1 – Get Your Mind Right

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you’ve probably heard me talk about the Pareto principle before. It’s also known as the 80/20 rule, which states that 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the actions. Believe it or not, 80% of your success interviewing is psychological. I could teach you every single persuasion technique that there is, but you need to believe in yourself. If you don’t, you will never beat out another candidate with a stronger mindset.

Your mindset means more than anything else during a remote interview. The story you are telling yourself creates the emotions you feel and what you are experiencing at that moment. This is the most important tip, and before having a remote interview, you must check your state and make sure you are ready.

I’ve been a huge fan of Tony Robbins for a long time, and my wife and I are members of his Platinum Partnership mastermind group. Tony teaches that 3 things determine your state, and a change in any of them can change the state you are currently in:

  1. Physiology
  2. Focus
  3. Language

At my IT staffing and recruiting agency, Focus GTS, our entire team changes their state every morning. We put on music, jump around, get a little crazy, and probably look ridiculous to anyone who would observe this from the outside. We then have a chant that we all yell out using language to focus on who we are and what we’re going to accomplish that day.

I know it sounds crazy, but there is a reason Tony Robbins has been teaching this for over 40 years because it works! Do not walk into another interview ever without changing your state, getting pumped up, and reminding yourself of the rockstar you are. Successful people do the things that others are unwilling to.

#2 – Stand Up During Your Remote Interview

This probably isn’t going to work in a face-to-face interview, but I know it will be a game-changer for your remote interview.

Standing is one of the long-held secret weapons of the greatest phone sales specialists in the world. It’s also an instant state change (see point #1 above). When you stand, you don’t only improve your posture, but it also allows you to get better airflow into your lungs, which improves tonality. Finally, you can generate more energy when standing. When you communicate excitingly and energetically, you will outshine the competition every time. When doing a remote interview, put in your earphones and stand confidently to answer the questions. If you are finding yourself on a video interview, put your laptop on your kitchen counter or bar so that you can stand and it won’t look strange.

Throughout my career, I’ve coached thousands of tech candidates before their interviews. I’ve learned over the years that it’s the small things that make the biggest difference. If you have the required skills for the job, that won’t be your problem. Instead, it will be the little tweaks, such as standing, that will create offers.

#3 – Learn How to Sell

I get it, a lot of people don’t have a good association with the words sales or selling, but the fact is that you are selling constantly. You get anything you want in life because you convince someone else to give it to you.

In a remote interview, you must know how to position yourself as the solution to a problem and sell your skillset. Once you learn this, you will have a skill that will pay you more than any education you already have. It will help you become an amazing communicator in both your personal and professional life.

There was never a better time to learn how to sell yourself in a remote interview. This is not something that you are going to learn overnight. You’re going to have to dedicate time to become a remote interview master. It’s kind of like going to the gym, one session isn’t going to transform your body, but in little time you’ll barely recognize yourself when you look in the mirror.

To get started on this journey, here are 3 books I would recommend:

1.   Pre-Suasion – Robert Cialdini

2.   Sell or Be Sold – Grant Cardone

3.   The Way of the Wolf – Jordan Belfort

I can’t stress this enough. It’s a very different world than it was 1 year ago. This is why we prepared this guide to upgrade your remote interview skills.
